The management and employees work hard at maintaining a safe and healthy work
environment. Since 1987, Wm. Groves Limited's Health and Safety Committee has been
committed to reducing workplace hazards and accidents by performing inspections,
through safety meetings addressing employee observations, suggestions and concerns, by
training all employees to work and live safely and most importantly by encouraging teamwork.
The following are part of the ongoing training programs for Wm. Groves' employees:
- first aid
- WHMIS, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System
- trench safety and hazards
- chain saw use / concrete stihl saw use
- electrical hazards
- heavy equipment use and their blind areas
- hazards of operating heavy equipment in reverse
- C.S.A.O. traffic control persons
- job site traffic control / traffic planning
- the use of tear-a-way safety vests
- retro reflective arm and leg bands used in night work
- locating and protection regulations when excavating around T.S.S.A.
governed oil and gas lines
- underground utility (i.e. Call Before You Dig) procedures
- fall arrest / fall restraint systems and emergency procedures
- confined space procedures / training in the use and care of confined
space gas testers
- certified in the use of air supplied respirators / types of respirators,
their use, proper seals, cleaning and maintenance
- daily safety circle check procedures of all vehicles, equipment and small
tools
- commercial vehicle wheel service training
- solitary working safety procedures
- hoisting and rigging safety procedures
- certified in the use of propane heaters and torches
- C.S.A.O. basics of supervising / accident investigation and reporting
- dispensing of fuel at a private outlet
- certified in the use of powered elevating work platforms
- hazard specific training in water and ice rescue
- hazard specific training in roadway work
- certified members of joint health and safety committee
- equipment lockout procedures
Wm. Groves Limited excels above the construction industry standards and has
received several different safety awards over the years from the following
associations:
- Ontario Sewer & Watermain Association
- Hamilton Halton Construction Association
- Hand Sewer, Watermain & Road Contractors Association
- in cooperation with the Ontario Construction Safety Association from 1987 to
2005
